1938
Founded in 1938 as Monroe Tree Surgeons, a residential tree and landscaping care company.
1952
A new line of business is added: Utility Line Clearance. Rochester Gas & Electric Corporation became our first customer.
1960s
Two new lines of business, Landscape Construction and Lawn Care Maintenance Services, two new operating offices, and a new name: Monroe Tree & Landscape, Inc.
1971
Monroe purchased Lewis Tree Service, a unionized line clearance company which positioned Monroe to expand utility line clearance services to include New York’s Niagara Mohawk Power Corp., New York State Electric & Gas Corp. and Central Hudson Gas and Electric Corp.
1976 - 1983
Lewis expands line clearance services into five new regional locations on the Eastern Seaboard: New England, Long Island, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Florida.
1988
Monroe purchases Love & Associates, positioning the company to expand into the Mid-Atlantic Region; North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia.
1992
The company is renamed Lewis Tree Service, Inc.
1998
Management and non-union employees purchase 30% of company stock and form Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) Company.
Company purchases Dumac Tree Service in New York.

2000
Management and non-union employees purchase remaining stock forming a 100% Employee Owned Company (ESOP).
2002
Company purchases Utility Line Clearance Company from Northern Tree Service in New England.
2003
Largest storm response ever as 1,100 employees helped restore service for various customers in Maryland, New Jersey, North Carolina and Virginia.
2003 - 2008
Winner of many National ESOP Awards including National ESOP Company of the Year in 2005 and Employee of the Year, Rita Tucker, in 2008.
2007
Company purchases Tamarack Forestry Service, Inc., positioning the Company to expand into Canada and Maine.
Company expands westward into Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio for new contracts with Dayton Power, Duke Energy and First Energy.
2008
Tom Rogers named President and COO
2011
Rochester Top 100 Company for the 13th consecutive year and 16th year overall.
Responded to Hurricane Irene and Northeast Snowstom with over 2400 employees.
Tom Rogers named CEO
2012
Named A.C. “Fred” Engelfried as Chairman of the Board of Directors.
Partnered with an Atlanta-based technology company to expand our capabilities to include work management applications for the energy and communications industries.
2012
Responded to Hurricane Sandy with over 1,125 crews serving 27 customers across 11 states
2016
Received an ETHIE award from Elevate Rochester (formerly the Rochester Area Business Ethics Foundation).
Joined forces with Carolina Tree Care to serve the residential and commercial tree market in North Carolina.

2017
Responded to Hurricanes Harvey and Irma with over 1,800 crew members
2018
Lewis Tree celebrated its 80th year of operation!

2018
Began a mission-critical journey to embrace a new view of safety and human performance.

2020
During one of the most active hurricane seasons on record, Lewis responds to six named storms (Isaias, Laura, Sally, Zeta, Eta and Delta) and one ice storm. To support Isaias, Lewis sent over 1,600 crew members to Louisiana and surrounding areas.
2021
Over 1,200 Lewis employees deployed to the Southern US (Florida, Louisiana, Texas) and New England during the 2021 storm season to help restore power after tropical storms/hurricanes Elsa, Henri, and Ida and various Nor’easters.
2022
Lewis announced a leadership transition with Leslie Kass, a recognized leader in the energy industry, named as CEO-elect.
