Former Dairy Manager

Alvaro Nino, General Foreperson, Lewis Tree Service

How does one go from being in a cooler all day to being in the fresh air and sunshine all day? We caught up with Alvaro Nino to find out how.

What was it like being a dairy manager?

The days were long, I usually worked ten-hour shifts. Hours around the holidays were even worse, and I usually had to work every single holiday. It was horrible, so was the actual work that I was doing. My whole shift was just checking expiration dates on foods and restocking the shelves. I will say though, that I enjoyed the interaction I was able to have with the customers, especially the ones that came in every single day.

Was there room for growth and advancement?

No, there was not anywhere else to move up to. I was there for a few years and stopped moving up and the pay was extremely low. At the time it was just a job to me, I did not see myself being there long-term.

Have you found career growth at Lewis?

Yes. I started all the way at the bottom when I came to Lewis as a groundsperson and worked up to trimmer trainer, trimmer, top trimmer, one person and now general foreperson. In this industry and at Lewis you are always learning, you never stop learning. If you want to grow and move up, the opportunity is there for you.

Were you also going to school while working?

Yes I was but I was there to please my parents, I was not necessarily there for me. I had no idea what I wanted to do. I was so lost. I did not know what I wanted until I came Lewis. Being here, working at Lewis, I have found my purpose.

What was the most difficult part of the career change?

I mean when I was working in the supermarket, I was in the cooler for essentially my entire shift. Now I am outside, usually in the heat, for essentially my entire shift. It was just a matter of getting used to the different temperatures, that was the most difficult part of  the career change for me.

What do you love most about the work?

I love that every day is something new and different. It is not the same exact routine every single day. It is always exciting, and it keeps you on your toes.

What would you tell others who are considering changing careers?

I would tell them to give it a try. I would tell anyone to give it a try. If you are down to take chances, do it, it is worth it. Nothing comes easy, but if you stick to it, it will pay off. I never expected to be where I am today, especially at this young of an age. I thought I would be stuck packing yogurts for the rest of my life. I joined Lewis, stuck it out, and boom look where I am now.
