Former Garden Center Retail Worker

Marcus Melgoza, Crew Leader, Lewis Tree Service

How does someone who started studying business in college while working in retail make their way back to the industry? We caught up with Marcus Melgoza to learn how!

You started in vegetation management right out of high school?

Yeah, I was only in the industry a couple of months before I moved back home and started college for business and worked at a home improvement retail store. While working at the home improvement retail store, they always placed me in the garden center, so I had the opportunity to learn about planting and topsoil. I love learning, but I made the decision to get back into the industry after getting married because I knew that I would not be able to provide for us just by working in retail.

Why was working in retail not sustainable?

They lacked benefits. They either did not have benefits available to me or if they did, they did not educate me about the benefits that were available. Lewis educates everyone about the benefits. I love that at Lewis I have a 401K and I am part of an ESOP. I do not have to worry about taking money out of my paycheck, it is automatically taken out. I have been with Lewis for three years and I am wowed by how my money has grown.

You love learning, are there opportunities to learn and grow at Lewis?

Yes, what I love most about working at Lewis is that I can learn. I love that I am learning how to manage crews. I love that I am learning how to do reports and how to analyze them to understand how it impacts the crew and manipulating the numbers to understand how to do better. I like the numbers. It is fun for me. I like learning how to come out winning.

Why Lewis?

Well, I knew about all the competing companies because of strong family ties to the industry and actually worked at some competitors before coming to Lewis but one of my family members that works at Lewis told me about how focused Lewis is on safety and how they reward you for being safe. He had an entire collection of safety medals that he has received over the years. Lewis really cares, they want you to succeed, they appreciate your hard work but most importantly they care about your safety.

What makes Lewis stand out?

Lewis goes the extra mile to put things together for their crews to learn. When I was at the competitors, I did not get the proper training and to be honest, they did not really care to train me. My leaders at Lewis have been good about teaching me everything that they know. I started as a trimmer and I told them I did not want to be stuck there, I wanted to continue to grow. They teach me how to manage the crews and about the equipment. I would also include that everything about Lewis is connected and organized, I cannot say that some competitors are that way.

How do you feel about being essential?

I feel so proud to be considered essential. It makes my day when I walk into a store and people thank me for my work. The appreciation goes a long way and makes me feel good. It also feels good knowing that the government supports and recognizes our industry as essential.

What would you tell others who are in retail or unsure about college?

I would tell them, especially those that are lost in what they want to do, that this is a great opportunity, especially Lewis because they are all about teaching. Being at Lewis, I am learning so much, especially about running a business. I would also tell them about the benefits that Lewis has and how they compare to the competitors out there. I would tell them to give it the career a try and to give Lewis a try.
