Spotlight on Uziel Cruz, Former Home Automation Specialist, Current (Acting) General Foreperson, Lewis Tree Service
How does one go from surfing the waves and automating the homes of Hawaii to trimming trees and leading a team?
We caught up with Uziel Cruz to find out how.
You worked in Hawaii doing home automations, what was that like?
I mean the experience of working in Hawaii was incredible, I will never forget it. The team that I had worked with, we would wake up every morning at 4am and surf for a few hours before heading to work and then would surf again when we were done with work. But in terms of the actual work, I got bored of it.
When you first started in home automation, did see yourself in that industry long-term?
At first maybe, yeah, I mean, I had gotten into home automation because at the time it was new, even now, I would consider it relatively new. I knew that companies were looking for workers and I was extremely interested in it but the more that I did the work, the more it become just a hobby for me.
What about the work made it become like a hobby for you?
Honestly, I got bored of it. It was the same exact work every single day. The only difference was the customer that you were doing the work for.
Does working in vegetation management and at Lewis provide you with the opportunity to learn and grow so you do not get bored with the work you are doing?
Yeah, when I first started at Lewis, each day I would like it more and more. My leader started to teach me more and more, and the more I learned the more I enjoyed what I was doing. I would wake up and look forward to going to work, and I still do. The people that I work with are like family. We come to work every morning, talk, and joke around like we have not seen each other for months. I am surrounded by a great group of people and could not ask for a better team.
You mentioned that you could not ask for a better team, what are the opportunities for growth like at Lewis?
I mean the opportunities are out there. I never imagined myself having this position. Having the ability to do this job is awesome. I started as a groundsperson, and then the opportunity to work in a bucket and because of my experience with line voltage and reading maps, I was given the opportunity to get my feet wet and become a team leader and I am now an acting general foreperson. At my age, I never imaged myself having this. If you work hard and keep going the opportunities are there.
What do you love most about working for Lewis?
Apart from the money, the way that Lewis takes care of their employees is incredible. It is something that you don’t see at other vegetation management and utility companies. That is what I love and why I do not ever want to leave.
Outside of work, what do you enjoy doing?
I love being outside – going on hikes or going to the shooting range. I also love building and keeping my hands busy – my most recent project has been remodeling my kitchen.
